Happy Independence Day! We started the day with a buttermilk pancake breakfast in our condo.
Steamboat Springs had a parade, so we headed down there and were able to meet up with some of the other members of our group to enjoy the parade.
It was fun and the boys really liked it.
They had a lot of people throwing candy and squirting water at the crowd, it was an interactive parade.
This iguana was a favorite entry. After the parade, we got kabobs from the farmers market and ate on the grass, they were tasty.
Then we stopped for ice cream on the way back to the condo.
Isaac, Heather, and I headed back out again soon to float down the Yampa river, which flows through Steamboat Springs. We rented our tubes and shoes and pushed off.
At the first big rapid, Heather was popped out of her tube and then the tube got stuck in the rapid. We made our way to the side and waited for the tube to float down to us.
Next, it started
raining on us; thankfully, that didn't last too long, but it wasn't very warm so we were cold the whole time. As we were going by a couple other rafters, one of the girls fell out of her tube and started freaking out because she didn't have a life jacket. The biggest danger was that she was freaking out, the river wasn't too rough and she didn't go under the water at all. But some kayakers nearby were telling us to help her. Isaac jumped out of his tube and started trying to swim over, but when he got to her he stood up and told her to too and she was barely over her knees. The rest of our trip down was mostly uneventful and pleasant. We made it to the end and waited for the van to take us back with our water shoes full of river water.
It was a fun trip. Back at the condo, we took warm showers which felt good. We met up with the rest of the Shields family for BBQ hamburgers and a family picture. Then we played some games. The first one was passing a golf ball from one person to the next with a paper towel roll cut in half.
The first team to reach the finish line won. My team won twice. It was hard to control and pretty fun.
The second group of teams were pretty chaotic.
Then we split into two teams and played the Human Knot.
Mom's three brothers, Ray, Dave, and Terry. Then we tried making one big knot with 14 people, but that was quite the knot and we weren't able to untangle ourselves.
Then we made a pyramid.
Everyone had a good time hanging out together.
We went back upstairs and had German chocolate cake for Uncle Dave's birthday before it was time for fireworks. We lined up along the pool fence to watch the fireworks from town.
They started a lot later than we thought, but there was a father with his sons shooting some off in front of us, plus some random big ones being shot off in the distance. The boys really liked the them.
It was really cold out there, but finally the main fireworks started and they were beautiful.
